Elizabeth B. McGeown
MANCHESTER, NH & BOWERBANK, ME – Elizabeth B. McGeown, 98, died peacefully at home Saturday, February 2, 2013, following a brief illness. Elizabeth was born in Toureigh, Mitchelestown Co. Cork, Ireland, on Feb. 14, 1914, the daughter of James M. and Mary Ann (Burke) Cusack. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 16.
Elizabeth arrived in Boston in 1930, working as a housekeeper. She met and married her husband, Arthur in 1934 and had six children. Her family moved to Sharon, Mass., where Elizabeth worked for the Franciscan Friary and Sharon Manor Nsursing Home for many years.
Elizabeth spent most of her time raising her family in a home filled with guidance and love. She shared her knowledge of cooking, gardening, and in spite of never learning to swim, she enjoyed boating and fishing, most often during summers at her cottage on Sebec Lake, in Maine. After her family was grown and later in her life, she moved to Marblehead, Mass., met and married Herbert Osborn, living in Salem, Mass., for many years. They enjoyed travels across the country and visits to Ireland well into their 80s. At Elizabeth’s core was a deep sense of family and she focused her life on her loved ones. She loved nothing more than to gather with her family and friends to enjoy good food, great times and making cherished memories.
Elizabeth is survived by her son, Arthur McGeown; four daughters, Jean Coffey, Sarah Danca and her husband, John, Mary Parsley and her husband, John, and Agnes McGeown and her husband, William Berg Jr.; one brother, Edmund Cusack of County Galway, Ireland; 42 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She had a way of making each of them feel “special”. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur F. McGeown; her second husband, Herbert B. Osborn; daughter, Ann Taylor; sons-in-law, Dwight Taylor and Bernard Coffey; daughter-in-law, Reba McGeown; four brothers and four sisters.
The family will receive visitors 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 8, at Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., in Manchester, NH, followed immediately by a funeral service in the funeral home.
