FA girls swim to an eighth-place finish at Class B championship
BRUNSWICK — The Foxcroft Academy girls swim team scored 107 points to finish eighth out of 27 teams at the 2014 Class B State Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 17 at Bowdoin College.
Julia Annis had the Ponies’ highest finish as she placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 8.92 seconds. Annis, who this winter season also started on Foxcroft’s Class B East semifinal basketball team, came in fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.85 seconds.
Avery Carroll had a fourth-place swim in the 100 backstroke, at 1:04.64. She swam the first leg of the fifth-place 200 medley relay team, joining Annis, Gabie Johnson and Jillian Annis for a time of 1:59.44.
Johnson was eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.85. Carroll had the meet’s fastest time in the 100 butterfly consolation finals as she placed ninth with a time of 1:04.37.
Molly Foley of Greenville High School, who practices with the Foxcroft team, represented her school at the state championship. Foley accounted for 16 Laker points as Greenville was 22nd in the team standings.
Foley placed ninth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.68 seconds. She also came in 10th in the 50 freestyle at 26.57 seconds.
Mount Desert Island High School won the girls’ state championship with a score of 326 points, ahead of the 252 tallied by Camden Hills Regional High School and 244 points for Greely High School of Cumberland. The title is MDI’s second in a row, third in four years and fourth overall in school history.
On Feb. 18 the top Class B boys swimmer from across the state swam at Bowdoin, with Clay Carroll and Berke Taner representing Foxcroft. The duo combined for eight points as the Ponies tied Winslow High School for 22nd place out of 26 schools.
Carroll came in 11th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.65. He also placed 15th in the 100 freestyle at 54.60 seconds.
Taner was 24th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.94 seconds. He swam in the 50 freestyle and came in 28th at 25.80 seconds.
Greely claimed the boys’ title with a score of 289 points, while Morse High School of Bath came in second with 263 points and Camden Hills, Cape Elizabeth High School and MDI were all tied for third with 196 points apiece. Greely took home top honors for the fifth year in a row, and the school won its 10th overall boys’ state swimming crown.
