SNOW ROLLER DAY

An old-fashioned snowroller, which was used to pack down the travel ways during winter, is pulled behind a carriage along Main Street in Monson during a past Snow Roller Day. This year the town will celebrate the annual Snow Roller Day on Saturday, Feb. 22 with numerous activities for all ages.
Tenth annual Chocolate Festival Sunday, Feb. 16
GREENVILLE — The Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 10th annual Chocolate Festival on Feb. 16 from 1-4 p.m. at the Masonic Hal1. Come and enjoy 12 samples from over 30 unique, chocolate concoctions. There will be a Chinese raffle and a silent auction, both boasting items from all over the region.
For those with children, there is a children’s corner. a Civic Chef Challenge will have prominent community members competing to hold the title of Best Chocolatier. For more information please call 695-2702.
Ward off the winter blues with complementary care
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Pine Tree Hospice is calling all caregivers past or present, personal or professional. This free event on Feb. 22 is designed to provide a time to be cared for and to relax.
In the morning enjoy coffee, tea and baked goods while Gayle Worden, executive director of Friends of Community Fitness in Guilford, provides a presentation about yoga. Worden’s presentation will be followed by an optional yoga class and a demonstration of Thai bodywork. After a lovely lunch by Lulu’s Catering, the afternoon session will offer an opportunity to enjoy personal pampering with activities such as massage, Reiki, manicure, acupuncture, aromatherapy and craniosacral therapy.

Sangerville’s Pack 61 Cub Scouts and their families enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at the annual Winter Family Fun Day on Davis Pond in Parkman. The day was spent ice skating, sliding, laughing around the camp fire, having family time, sipping hot cocoa and toasting marshmallows. The highlight was ice fishing and to see who could catch the biggest fish.
‘Chasing Ice’ screening Feb. 14 by the DDATT
DEXTER — On Friday, Feb. 14, DDATT (Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition) will show the documentary film “Chasing Ice”. This production by acclaimed National Geographic photographer James Balog premiered in 2012. It uses time lapse photography to document the significant ice reduction taking place across the Arctic and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. This event begins at 7 p.m. at the Abbott Memorial Library Meeting Room.

Bluegrass jam on Sunday
CAMBRIDGE — On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Bluegrass Music Association of Maine will sponsor the Northern Bluegrass Jam at the town hall from noon to 5 p.m. — acoustic only. The jam will include door prizes, 50/50 raffle and refreshments. For more information, please call 277-3365.
Dexter Winter Festival set for Feb. 14-16
DEXTER — The town of Dexter and the Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will host the 14th annual Winter Festival on Feb. 14, 15 and 16. The 2014 theme is the Winter Olympics.
On Friday, Feb. 14 the Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union hosts a chili cook-off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Ending Hunger in Maine. Dexter Regional High School presents awards for the snow sculpture competition at noon in the gym — work can begin for the town snow sculpture contest on Feb. 14 with the works of winter art being created at the Little Wassookeag area. The Wassookeag Snowmobile Club serves its Hal Wilkins Memorial Scholarship ham dinner from 5-7 p.m.

FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP — Snow sculpture competitions, including those for Dexter Regional High School students and for the general public, will be part of the 2014 Dexter Winter Festival. This year’s “Olympics” event will include events on Friday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 16.
Saturday, Feb. 15 the Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breakfast and lunch served. Kids can attend a sledding party, with radar, at the hill by Dexter Regional High School from 10 a.m. to noon. From noon to 3 p.m. the Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will have horse-drawn sled rides.
During the day, and through 8 p.m., the ice skating rink will be open. The Town Hall will feature roller skating from 2-4 p.m. The Moosehead Trail Motor Lodge hosts a dance and 50/50 raffle starting at 8:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Feb. 16 the Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse will again be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breakfast and lunch served. At 8 a.m. participants in the antique snowmobile ride-in gather at 8 a.m. at the Little Lake Wassookeag parking lot, and the procession will travel along the railroad bed through town at 11 a.m. to join the larger snowmobile parade. Judging for the snow sculpture contest takes place at 10 a.m.

PAIR OF PERCH
At the Milo Town Hall weigh station Wade Witham of Sebec holds two of the five perch he caught during the 2012 Schoodic Lake Ice Fishing Derby. Witham was fishing with his father at Seboeis Lake, one of the three lakes included in the derby. This year’s derby, the 52nd annual event, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16 on Schoodic, Ebeemee and Seboeis lakes.

DOUBLE DIPPING
Jesse McGowan of Mariaville caught a pair of togue during the 2011 edition of the Schoodic Lake Ice Fishing Derby held at several lakes in the Milo/Brownville area. Even though the fish weren’t prize winners, they were a nice catch at 20 inches and 2.2 pounds and 18 inches and 1.65 pounds respectively. McGowan is pictured at Knights Landing in Brownville with one of the 536 fish registered during the ice fishing derby held several years ago.
