Rev. Maynard W. Hammond
Rev. Maynard W. Hammond
DOVER-FOXCROFT – Rev. Maynard W. Hammond, 88, husband of Rosalie (Robinson) Hammond, passed away Dec. 19, 2013, at a Bangor hospital. The son of Walter and Fannie (Cassell) Hammond, he was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Baltimore, MD, and attended public schools there.
During World War II, he served from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge, he attended Baltimore Junior College. Then, during the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953. After Maynard was discharged from the service, instead of going home to Baltimore, MD, he went to Bangor. There, he became a student at Bangor Theological Seminary. After seminary, his first church was the First Baptist Church of Dover-Foxcroft. While there, he met Rosalie Robinson, who became his wife.
After a few years, Maynard enrolled in a “clinical pastoral training course” in a hospital in Danvers, MA. He then accepted the position of chaplain at what was then known as Bangor State Hospital. While chaplain at the hospital, Maynard also served the Veazie Congregational Church. It was during this time that son Paul was born.
In the early 60’s, Maynard accepted the position of “Director of Christian Education” at the Grosse Pointe Congregational Church in Grosse Pointe, MI. The highlight of that experience was taking the senior youth group to Williamsburg, VA, for a week. Daughter, Suzanne, was born in Grosse Pointe.
In the late 60’s, Maynard heard from the pulpit committee of the Federated Church in Skowhegan. For Maynard, it was back to the pulpit for the next twenty-five years. Along with his church work, he enjoyed being a member of the Rotary Club. Maynard retired and has lived in Dover-Foxcroft, the town in which he started his ministry.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Hammond; a son, Paul Hammond and his wife, Paula; a daughter, Suzanne Tilton and her husband, Larry; two grandchildren, Paige Hammond and Alyssa Tilton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred Robinson Jr., Bill Robinson and his wife, Ginny, and Jim Robinson and his wife, Peggy; a sister-in-law, Joan Conley; many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by a special group of friends from Skowhegan.
Maynard was predeceased by his parents; his in-laws, Alfred and Elinor Robinson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Mattie Hammond, Dwight and Eleanor Hammond, and Clyde and Mary Hammond; and a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bernie Shaw.
Friends were invited to call from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m., Monday, December 23, 2013, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with Rev. Chad Poland officiating. Burial in the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery will be in the spring. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
