Reindeer Run raises more than $4,000 for Hanson family

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Twenty-nine runners and more than 35 walkers braved cold and windy conditions to compete in the second annual Reindeer 5K Run and Walk at Foxcroft Academy on the afternoon of Dec. 8. The race was sponsored by Foxcroft Academy’s Key Club, which pledged to donate all proceeds to the family of Eric ‘94 and Melanie Hibbard Hanson ‘96, who lost their Charleston home in a fire on Dec. 4.

HOOVES ON THE STARTING LINE — Nearly 30 runners and 35 walkers took part in the second annual Reindeer Run 5K on Dec. 8, sponsored by the Foxcroft Academy Key Club. The event raised over $4,000 to benefit the Hanson family who lost their Charleston home to fire.

Donations are still trickling in, but at this point it is safe to estimate that the Key Club — with great support from students and community members; the administration, faculty and staff; the National Honor Society, Latin Club, Spanish Club, indoor track team, wrestling team; and the Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis Club — will soon be able to hand the Hanson family a check for more than $4,000.
“I was very impressed with the turnout yesterday,” said FA Key Club Advisor George Rolleston. “I’m blown away by the amount of money we were able to raise for this extremely worthy cause. Our kids are ecstatic that they were able to help the Hansons to this extent.”
“This event is further proof that we live in a community that takes care of its own,” said Foxcroft Academy Head of School Arnold Shorey, who walked the course with his wife, Stacy, and Welsh terrier, Nomar. “I couldn’t be more impressed with our Key Club and with the outpouring of community support I’ve seen over the past few days.”
As for the race itself, Foxcroft Academy sophomore Cooper Nelson set the pace with a time of 19 minutes, 55 seconds, edging out both Eli (20:17) and Esau Olson (20:23), while Avery Carroll (22:34), Liza Grigoryeva (22:46) and Abby Henderson (24:44) were the top-finishing female runners. Dan Straine (24:26) was the first faculty member to cross the finish line, and Bangor’s David Samuelian completed his 50th road race of 2013.
