
BJHS Alumni Association announces 2019 scholarships
BROWNVILLE JUNCTION — The BJHS Alumni Association awarded 13 scholarships at the recent annual reunion to grandchildren and great-grandchildren of members of the Alumni Association or deceased members of the association. The scholarship recipients are as follows:
The Margaret Law Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the medical area. Two scholarships will be given to students in this area of study. The first scholarship recipient this year is Jordan Durant of Brownville. She is the granddaughter of Whit & Linda Coburn and Barbie Durant. She attends Husson University and is majoring in physical therapy. Durant’s GPA last term was 3.86.
The second Margaret Law Scholarship is awarded to Alyssa Murano of LaGrange. She is the granddaughter of Donald Martin, Sr. and attends Husson University. Her major is occupational therapy and her GPA is 3.7.
A third Law scholarship will be awarded to Joshua Martin of LaGrange. Martin is also the grandchild of Donald Martin, Sr. attending Husson University. He is majoring in psychology and has a GPA of 3.7.
Three scholarships are open to all students who apply: The Eleanor Rosebush scholarship recipient is Brandon Bryer of Scarborough. Bryer is the great-grandson of Elmer Cunningham (deceased) and plans to attend the University of Cincinnati pursuing an advanced degree of Juris Doctor. His GPA his senior year at Morehead State University in Kentucky was 4.0.
A second Eleanor Rosebush Scholarship is awarded to Hunter Russo of Casco. Russo is the grandson of Florence McGrath Russo. He is attending the University of Southern Maine majoring in business management. His GPA is 2.96 (3.0).
The recipient of the Don Stiles Scholarship is Victoria Bryer of Dayville, Connecticut whose grandparent is Janet Burgoyne. Bryer attends Eastern Connecticut State University majoring in criminology. She has a GPA of 3.56.
The Greta Connors Scholarship is presented to Clayton Preble of Milo. He is the grandson of Barbara Sickler. Preble attends Maine Maritime Academy and is majoring in power engineering. His GPA last spring was 3.48.
The Henry & Annie Graves Scholarship is awarded to Mackenzie Worcester. Worcester is from Washburn and her BJHS Alumni connections are Fred Worcester and Carol Melanson. She is attending Husson University majoring in physical therapy and her GPA is 3.38.
A second Don Stiles Scholarship will be awarded to Abigail J. Koehler of New Durham, New Hampshire who is the granddaughter of Lauris Boulanger Sailor. She is attending Springfield College in Massachusetts majoring in marketing. Her GPA is 3.34.
An additional Greta Connors Scholarship will be awarded to Alexander Bryer of Scarborough, great-grandson of Elmer Cunningham (deceased) who is attending Maine Maritime Academy majoring in marine engineering technology. His GPA is 3.3.
Two scholarships are awarded specifically to high school seniors:
The BJHS Alumni Scholarship is awarded to Alex Morrison of Baileyville. Morrison is the grandson of Larry and Donna Morrill. He graduated from Woodland Junior/Senior High School in Baileyville in June with a GPA of 100.0 – or 4.3. Morrison plans to attend the University of Maine to major in mechanical engineering.
The Allen B. Lente Scholarship is presented this year to Jeremy Martin of LaGrange. Martin is the grandson of Donald Martin, Sr. and a 2019 graduate of Penquis Valley School. His GPA is 95.5 – or 4.0. He plans to attend Husson University majoring in exercise science.
A second BJHS Alumni Scholarship is awarded to Ian Eastwood of Baden, Pennsylvania who graduated this spring from North Allegheny Senior High School with at GPA of 3.4. He is the grandson of Ann Barnes Giamalis (deceased) and plans to attend Ohio University majoring in business.
Scholarship Committee Chair Susan Worcester commented at the meeting that the association “is blessed to have young people associated with graduates of Brownville Junction High School who are such excellent scholars and are working diligently to achieve their goals.”
Applications for these scholarships can be found at TRCMaine.org under the BJHS Alumni section. Scholarship checks will be sent out at the beginning of the second semester. Applications for next year’s scholarships will not be accepted until students are able to provide grades from the spring semester or end of their senior year in high school. The deadline for receiving applications in 2020 is July 31.
