Physical therapist promotes literacy for the holidays

BREWER — Carol Lane, a physical therapist and CEO of Results Physical Therapy and Wellness Center with offices in Brewer, Dexter and Dover-Foxcroft has long been a supporter of literacy and activities which encourage reading.

One activity she has recently adopted as a means of encouraging literacy is the U.S. Marine Corps holiday program Toys for Tots. Long known for its humanitarian purpose to provide holiday gifts for underprivileged youth, an equally important goal for Toys for Tots is to provide books as part of its literacy program. Often, the books received will be the only books in that home.
“Drugs and illiteracy are the major concerns of people in this area, so providing quality books to our youth that are entertaining as well as educational, and something the entire family can enjoy, is something I want to contribute to,” Lane said.
The books she prefers to give are Stories from the Golden Age, a line of adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy and western stories written by L. Ron Hubbard during the 1930s and 40s.
Providing high interest books, loaded with action and which have a moralistic undertone—is important, she feels. “I truly feel that the Golden Age Stories will make a big difference in enhancing the literacy levels of both children and even adults,” Lane added.
