Greenville falls to Richmond in D West final

RICHMOND — Four goals in the second half helped Richmond High School defeat Greenville High School, 5-0, in the 2013 boys Class D West championship on the afternoon of Nov. 6.
Bobcat keeper Dustin Sullivan made six saves for the shutout to help Richmond (who improved to 13-2-2 with the win) end Greenville’s two-year reign as the Western Maine champions — the Lakers eliminated Richmond in the semifinals in 2012 and in the regional final two years prior. Greenville finished the season with a record of 12-4-1. Howie Stone, Matt Mendez and Evan Sullivan all played in the Laker goal, combining to stop five shots.

Greenville advanced to the D West championship game for the sixth year in a row, and faced Richmond for the fifth time in the six seasons. The Bobcats improved the team’s mark in those games to 4-1, including winning three straight meetings from 2008 to 2010.
Richmond advanced to the Class D state championship on Nov. 9 against Eastern Maine winner Bangor Christian at Morse High School in Bath. The 1-1 game went to penalty kicks, where Bangor Christian had a 4-2 advantage to win the state crown.
Bangor Christian won the Class D boys soccer championship for the fifth consecutive season, and sixth time in program history. The five straight state titles extends the Patriots’ Class D record and set a new mark for most ever by a Maine high school boys soccer team. The Waterville High School girls won five Class A championships in a row from 1980-84 and the North Yarmouth Academy girls won five straight Class C titles from 2003-07.
The victory over Richmond was Bangor Christian’s 61st in a row, a streak that includes wins against Greenville in the 2011 and 2012 state championships. The winning streak began in 2010, following a Bangor Christian loss to Penquis Valley High School.
