Moosehead Lake needs water quality monitors

GREENVILLE — The pristine waters of the magnificent Moosehead Lake area are a resource that make the area unique to both residents and visitors and upon which much of the local economy depends. The purpose of water quality monitoring is to monitor changes in the lake water so should any changes occur they can be quickly addressed. As a water quality monitor, you will test the turbidity using a Secchi Disk every two weeks during open water.

The Friends of Wilson Ponds and Lake Stewards of Maine are spearheading an effort to get water quality monitors for Moosehead Lake. Currently there is no consistent monitoring being done. The Lake Stewards of Maine experts provide training, support and all equipment — free of charge — for each water quality monitor.

Water quality monitor training and certification will be held on Friday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon on Wilson Pond. Snacks and beverages provided free of charge by Friends of Wilson Ponds.

Recertification for current water quality monitors will be held Aug. 9 at 1:30 p.m. on Wilson Pond. Snacks and beverages will also be provided free of charge by Friends of Wilson Ponds.
