Hannon announces departure as Mayo’s CEO

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — Edward J. Hannon announced on July 31 that he will be stepping down as President and CEO of Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft at the end of August.
    Hannon, who has led Mayo since Sept. 17, 2012, said he is leaving for personal/family reasons, and has decided to accept another position out of state.

    The Hospital Administrative District 4 Board of Directors will schedule a special meeting in early August to begin planning the selection process for a new CEO. It is expected that the HAD 4 Board will appoint an interim CEO to lead the hospital while a search begins for Hannon’s long-term replacement.
    “I am extremely happy to have had the opportunity to lead this great hospital. I know that I am leaving one of the best rural hospitals in America,” said Hannon. “This organization is truly a remarkable provider of health care services. It is obvious that staff, physicians, Board members and volunteers are so dedicated and want only the best for this region.”
    Hannon said the HAD 4 Board, which represents 13 member communities in Piscataquis, Penobscot and Somerset counties, is committed to following through on the strategic direction set over the past year.
    “I truly believe that Mayo Regional Hospital is on the right path to continue to be a strong independent hospital with employed provider practices, emergency medical services and behavioral health services,” Hannon said.
    “Over the past year, the hospital board and administration has taken a critical view of the current operations. We have taken the first steps in what will be a difficult process to improve operational issues,” said Hannon.
    “Additionally, we have recently recruited several new providers who will bring new services and specialists to the area. The future success of Mayo will depend on having high quality, efficient and productive primary care providers who refer patients for inpatient and outpatient services to the hospital and our local providers.”
    Hannon’s health care career spans nearly 35 years, and he has previous CEO experience at rural hospitals in Florida, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. He relocated to Maine last year and took over at Mayo Regional Hospital following the retirement of Ralph Gabarro, who had led the hospital for 15 years.
