Spring letter drive to support Dexter Public Health Association
Very soon, if not already, citizens of Dexter, Garland, and Ripley will receive a letter requesting donations to support the continued work of the Dexter Public Health Association. The Dexter Public Health Association nurses have been serving those needing help free of charge, since the 1930s. No insurances or individuals are ever billed. The free services are provided regardless of income status. The Association, a non-profit 501c3, is funded by community members whose generosity allows for the continuation of this critical work for the most vulnerable in our society, especially the elderly.
The work of the nurses includes helping individuals with chronic conditions, providing appropriate care in emergency situations, such as power outages, doing physical assessments, foot and skin care, assistance with medications, and wellness checks. They can instruct family members in wound care. In an effort to prevent illnesses and accidents, the nurses provide education about good health practices and safety within the home. Blood pressure clinics are available in each of the three town offices as well as at the senior housing developments. Medical equipment is on loan, free of charge, from the Association.
As we age or watch our neighbors, parents, and friends age, it is comforting to know that if we need the helpful, in-home nursing services that the DPHA provides, they are available in Dexter, Garland, and Ripley. A friendly face who can comfort and provide professional nursing services is most welcome to an elderly person or anyone who is sick. This service is especially important to those who live alone. As we all strive to age-in-place, a visit from a nurse is something that any one of us might need someday.
The Association is asking that members of the public be as generous as possible so that this service can continue in the coming years as our population grows older and experiences health challenges or infirmities. Even if you didn’t receive a letter, please send or bring monetary donations to the town office at 23 Main Street, Dexter.
