Mayo adds cardiologist to medical staff

   DOVER-FOXCROFT — Kathleen Harper, D.O., a non-invasive cardiologist, will join the Mayo Regional Hospital medical staff on Aug. 5, providing a new service for Piscataquis County. Cardiologists specialize in diseases of the heart, lungs and blood vessels, and manage complex cardiac conditions such as heart attacks and life-threatening, abnormal heartbeat rhythms.
Dr. Harper’s role will be to care for cardiac patients in an outpatient setting, perform and interpret diagnostic testing including EKGs, echocardiograms, stress tests and nuclear medicine studies. She will be available to oversee Mayo’s Heartwise cardiac rehabilitation program, and to consult with and support Mayo’s inpatient hospitalists, anesthesia and Emergency Department providers.
The cardiology office will be located in the Heartwise Suite 400 on the second floor of Mayo’s Medical Office building.

   Dr. Harper will be relocating to the Dover-Foxcroft area from Bridgeport, Conn., where she has been on the medical staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center since 1995. She most recently has served as Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, Medical Director of Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography at the Cardiovascular Imaging Center, and Medical Director of the Women’s Heart Program.
   Dr. Harper has also held medical school academic appointments at Tufts University, New York Medical College, Columbia Presbyterian, University of Connecticut and Quinnipiac University.
Dr. Harper and her family members have spent considerable time in Maine. She attended Bates College in Lewiston, before transferring to Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Conn., to earn her B.S. degree. Dr. Harper returned to Maine for medical school, receiving her D.O. in 1987 from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford.
Postdoctoral training included a residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, where she was Chief Resident. Dr. Harper remained at St. Vincent’s for fellowship training in cardiology, and was a non-invasive cardiology fellow at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. She has received additional subspecialty fellowship training in Cardiac CT and Vascular Ultrasound.
   Dr. Harper has an interest in the use of complementary and alternative medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine, and is a Master’s degree candidate in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at the University of South Florida.
   Dr. Harper is a Fellow in both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. She is a Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease subspecialty.
