Frank Applebee of Milo competed in the triathlon this year. Applebee has lost over 100 pounds within the last year and had been working toward a goal of competing in the triathlon for some time. With the tragic drowning death of Dacano Arno at Sebec Village, Applebee wanted to use his effort in the triathlon to raise money for emergency responder training in the community. Applebee gained sponsors for his effort and prepared for the triathlon on Friday when his bicycle broke. He was not discouraged and after swimming the half-mile course he then walked to the Y and completed the 12-mile biking portion on one of the Y’s stationary bikes.
“I was completely impressed with Frank’s determination and drive,” said YMCA Membership and Marketing Director Patrick Myers. “He had been working toward this goal for a long time and would not be discouraged. I have a huge amount of respect for him.”
Anyone wishing to make a donation in Support of Applebee’s accomplishment and emergency responder scholarships should contact the Piscataquis Regional YMCA.
