Elmer James “Tug” Inman
WESTBROOK- Elmer James “Tug” Inman, 92, passed away on December 19, 2017. Tug was born on August 20, 1925 in
Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. One of three children of Alice Childs Inman and Ernest Ira Inman.
In 1943, Tug was one of 107 proud 17-year olds from Maine who enlisted in the U.S. Navy. This group was called the Maine Victory Platoon. He served three years in World War II, most of that time on aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge, he returned to Dover-Foxcroft where he worked nights while finishing his schooling.
In 1950, he married Alice A. Wilson of Milo, Maine. In 1951, they moved to South Portland where Tug accepted a
position with Shaw’s. He retired with the company after 37 years. He was loved by all of his co-workers and was known for his wicked sense of humor and his jokes.
In 1960, Tug and Alice moved to Westbrook with their two young sons, Jim and Willy. Tug was an active member of his community, serving as an alderman on the Westbrook City Council and the Planning Board. He was also a 66-year member of Piscataquis Lodge #44 A.F. & A.M. at Milo Maine.
A loving father, he was very involved in his sons’ activities as a coach and scout leader.
Tug enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and he and Alice enjoyed spending time together on craft projects. The whole
family enjoyed their camp in Stratton with lots of hunting, fishing and making memories with their many friends and family.
Tug is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, a sister-in-law Julie Sweeney of Ormond Beach, FL, a daughter-in-law Pam Chernesky, her husband Edmond, and their daughter Hope of Farmington and a sister, Theresa Low. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including a special niece Valerie Wylie. He is predeceased by his parents, loving sons Jim and Wil, and a sister Betty Inman.
Family and friends were invited to a time of visitation on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Dolby, Blais & Segee Funeral Chapel, 35 Church St. Westbrook. A Masonic service was held at 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Arrangements will be shared at a future date for a Spring burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Milo, Maine.
