True Blues at the Center Theatre

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Center Theatre announces a unique performance on July 13 by True Blues, featuring Corey Harris and renowned roots musicians Guy Davis and Alvin Youngblood Hart.

    “We are so fortunate to have True Blues performing at the Center Theatre” says Executive Director Angela Bonacasa. “We have some amazing artists this season, but an experience like True Blues is something that comes along once in a lifetime. It isn’t often that performers with so much talent and knowledge come together for such a unique project, and having them here at the Center Theatre is a great honor.”
    Hosted by MacArthur Grant recipient and Bates College Honorary Doctor of Music Harris and featuring renowned roots musicians Davis and Youngblood Hart, True Blues chronicles the extraordinary living culture of the blues in an evening of music and conversation. Composer, singer and guitarist Harris is recognized as one of the most innovative roots musicians of his generation. With one foot firmly planted in the blues, Harris has celebrated into connections to gospel, early jazz, reggae and West African music. Davis is part soulful troubadour, part showman and all blues. A singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player who is always ready to put everything he has into his performances, he has storytelling in his blood. Youngblood Hart has built a legacy that transcends musical genres. Though his first explorations were into the world of roots blues, Hart has cultivated a bold rock & roll side to his music. 
    Both Harris and Youngblood Hart were featured in Martin Scorcese’s “The Blues: A Musical Journey,” which followed Harris on a roots journey to West Africa. Alvin contributed, as well, to Wim Wenders’ “The Soul Of a Man” and Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters.” Davis has often followed in the Thespian footsteps of his parents, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, most recently in the Broadway revival of “Finian’s Rainbow,” and earlier in “Mulebone” and “Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil.” Blues is at the center of their artistry, however, and the blues takes center stage in True Blues, the concert.
