An open invitation for outdoor exploration of the Demonstration Forest and Law Farm
In Maine we are fortunate to have access to thousands of acres of public land, which we can hike, explore and learn from. The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) would like to extend a warm welcome for all to enjoy a day or more at our two public lands – the Law Farm and the Demonstration Forest.
The PCSWCD Demonstration Forest is located in Williamsburg. It was deeded to the district in 1980 and since that time great effort has been made to develop the land into a diverse, educational forest. The PCSWCD has established an extensive trail system, which winds through historical sites, natural canyons, varieties of tree stands and offers visitors the option to explore, catch a glimpse at local wildlife and learn from our many interpretive signs placed along the trails. As you hike, you will come across a geocaching station and our outdoor classroom. You can enjoy a picnic lunch on picnic tables or in the field overlooking the mountain ranges to the north. The trail system at the Demonstration Forest when completed, makes for a moderate hike.
No matter the season, there is much to see and do at the Demonstration Forest. In the spring and summer, visitors can enjoy time outdoors and fall offers spectacular glimpses at the foliage. Winter at the forest offers snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
If you are local to or visiting Dover-Foxcroft, plan to take a look at our newest acquired public land, the Law Farm. The Law Farm was deeded to the PCSWCD in 2009 and with help from several generous grants, we have started to lay the foundation for this exceptional parcel of land. In 2014, the PCSWCD broke ground on a 1-mile loop trail, which is now 75 percent finished. Visitors can walk the start of this trail and get a feel for the variety of habitats that will be able to be explored once this extensive trail system is completed.
The PCSWCD staff hopes that during your visit to these two community forests, that you will snap a photo or two and submit them to our photo contest “Sights & Sounds of the PCSWCD Public Lands.” Photos can be submitted to info@piscataquisswcd.org or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/www.piscataquisswcd.org. The contest deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. and submissions are limited to 10 photos. The winning photo will be featured on the front page of our Fall Education Newsletter and the winner will receive a fun prize!
