Piscataquis County Retired Educators news
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Piscataquis County Retired Educators met Aug. 27 at the Bear’s Den, 12 members were in attendance. Gil Reynolds conducted the meeting in the absence of President Rheba Michaud.
Darlene Patterson was welcomed as a new member. Minnie McCormick read the collect and members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Secretary Gloria Burns gave the report of the last meeting and Treasurer Myrna Ricker gave her report. She noted the group now has enough money for the Esther Pennington Scholarship for the next two years. Those present discussed ways to increase the money. Several suggestions were noted but no decisions were made. Members encourage all retired teachers to join and help with that financial obligation.
Following lunch the community dinner in August was discussed and deemed a great success. The retired educators will plan to do another one next summer.
Nancy Grant was asked to talk about the trip to Canada she and her husband took last year. They had great adventures and saw a lot of sights in the five-month trip. The presentation was very interesting and Grant was thanked for the impromptu talk.
The September meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 26 with a silent auction being held to raise money for the scholarship. Ricker and McCormick will be in charge. Members were invited to bring a guest as well as items for the auction.
Also at that meeting, McCormick will conduct a necrology for six retired teachers who have passed away in the last year — Gale Shirley, Lois Reynolds, Gweneth Emery, Louis Stevens, Phil Gerow, and John Glover.
September is the last regular meeting but there will be a Christmas program in December with a potluck lunch. The retired educators will then be in recess until April 2018.
