Monson Summerfest returns on Saturday
MONSON — The town of Monson’s annual Summerfest will feature a day of events on Saturday, July 15 to celebrate the season.
The weekend festivities start with a concert by the General Store Jammers on Friday, July 14 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Pete’s Bakery.
On July 15 the Lake Hebron Slate Man Triathlon starts at 8 a.m. at the Monson Gym, with registration beginning at 7:15 a.m. Participants can take part as individuals or in teams of three as they run the Indian Pond loop to the Greenleaf landing, where they will kayak across the lake to the Town Cove Beach and then cycle back to the Monson Gym. Registration can be done in advance at the town office (997-3641).
At 9 a.m. spectacular field games start at the ball field behind the gym and run through 11 a.m., and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be a craft fair on Main Street. The post office hosts a coloring contest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the post office also will hand out papers for a scavenger hunt from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office will host a bicycle safety event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the skatepark on Water Street. A bicycle raffle runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as American Legion Post 116 has donated a boys and a girl bike.
The Monson Historical Society is open during the day on Saturday, with outdoor spinning demonstrations. The society hosts Libra Foundation CEO Craig Denekas at 11 a.m. for a discussion on the organization’s plans to revitalize the community.
A library book sale will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the adjacent town office will be a cribbage tourney from noon to 2 p.m.
A pottery workshop starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Libra building next to the gym.
A car show takes place in the Monson Gym parking lot from 1 to 3 p.m. Farm in the Woods, located on the Stewart Road, offers tours starting at 1 p.m.
The Anything That Floats Race will take off at 2:30 p.m. at the boat landing to travel across Lake Hebron to the Lakeshore House beach, with registration at 2 p.m. The humorous competition has contestants often wearing unusual costumes in their homemade watercraft.
The Monson Academy alumni social hour and banquet will be in the Monson Gym from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The Lakeshore House hosts live music from 6 to 9 p.m., prior to the “Exploding Lights” fireworks at 9 p.m. over the ball field.
