Nearly 40 SAD 41 elementary pupils receive $100 college scholarships

Twenty four students at the Brownville Elementary School, 11 at Marion C. Cook School in LaGrange and three students at Milo Elementary were awarded $100 college scholarships from Maine College Circle and Bob Stewart. Stewart visits SAD 41 twice each year to speak about the importance of higher education.

BJ Bowden, the school’s guidance counselor, makes all the arrangements and works with the students who write essays as their application for the award. The teachers then work with the students in class to complete the writing projects. Students also receive VIP badges which identify them to colleges all over the state.
The first scholarships were awarded to students who are now juniors at Penquis Valley High School. This is the sixth year of the program, and next year the first recipients will be able to use their scholarships as they apply to colleges and technical centers.
