New ownership, same commitment to RVCS Backpack Program

DEXTER — Bud’s Shop ‘n Save gave discounts on food for the Ridge View Community School’s (RVCS) Backpack Program for several years. When Hannaford bought out the store, they donated $3,500 for the Backpack Program. It was given at the ribbon-cutting ceremony which Mrs. Greaves, RVCS school nurse, and local Kiwanis members were invited to. This occurred on Dec. 17.
When this program started in 2011 the school did less than 20 packs. Each year the numbers increased and now, the Backpack Program sends home 76 packs for students in need a week. The backpacks are designed to feed a family of four and include cereal or another breakfast food, pasta and snacks. Food boxes are also available. These can include frozen meat, bread, eggs, fresh produce and dairy products. Last year was also the first time that the school worked to provide food for students over the summer.
Students in need of this program can be referred by any staff member or a family member by calling the school (924-6000 ext. 2213). The school is always looking for more students, and no forms or financial information is required to join.
