Maine Civil Air Patrol cadets mark 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 at International Seaplane Fly-In

GREENVILLE — Remembering. Honoring. Serving.

The Civil Air Patrol Maine Wing joined communities across the nation in marking the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

Leading members in this important observance was Cadet Capt. Reese Lister of County Composite Squadron, serving as the color guard officer. Cadet Capt. Lister also led an educational presentation for our cadets focused on the events of Sept. 11.

On Saturday, Sept. 12 at the 52nd annual International Seaplane Fly-in members participated in a formal presentation of colors, the National Anthem, a moment of silence and a coordinated American flag-waving observance, accompanied by a Missing Man Formation flyover, in support of Wreaths Across America’s 25th anniversary Sept. 11 remembrance initiative.

This tradition holds special meaning here in Maine. Following Sept. 11, a small group of women began standing along a roadside, waving American flags in honor of those who had died and in support of our nation. They became known as the Freeport Flag Ladies. What began as a simple act of remembrance grew into a lasting tradition of patriotism, unity and love of country.

At the conclusion of the observance, the American flag used during the ceremony was donated as a lasting symbol of remembrance and community service to Gary Norris, president of the International Seaplane Fly-in to be flown each year.
