Spring flood risk low as Maine drought continues

Despite normal snowfall this winter, Maine remains in a years-long drought with record low stream flow, which puts the state at below normal flood risk this spring, according to the Maine Emergency Management Agency.

Flood projections are well below historical averages.

Even with the melting snowpack, wetlands and aquifers are likely to remain depleted, the agency said, leaving Maine in the ongoing drought.

As the planet warms due to human-caused climate change, periods of drought and extreme flooding are already becoming more frequent and intense, according to data from NASA.
