Penquis awarded $10,000 grant from Free ME from Lung Cancer

Penquis C.A.P., Inc. has been awarded a second $10,000 grant from Free ME from Lung Cancer to help individuals with lung cancer and other cancer diagnoses in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties access transportation for treatment and other essential services.

Maine’s lung and overall cancer incidence rates remain higher than U.S. averages, according to the Maine Cancer Registry. Early detection and treatment are key to improving patient outcomes. Grant funding from Free ME from Lung Cancer strengthens access to care by covering transportation needs so individuals can stay connected to treatment.

“One of the most common requests from individuals diagnosed with cancer is transportation assistance,” said Steven Richard, Penquis Transportation Services director. “Funding from Free ME from Lung Cancer helps ensure individuals have a reliable way to get to their appointments and stay engaged in the treatment that supports their health.”

Transportation assistance is available for cancer treatment and post-treatment care, early cancer screenings, wellness checks, annual physicals and other health needs associated with a cancer diagnosis. Services are designed for individual needs. Rides may be provided through volunteer drivers, taxis or agency vehicles. Reimbursement is also available for individuals who drive themselves or receive a ride from a friend or family member.

“We are happy to allocate funding to Penquis to support patients battling lung and other cancers,” said Deb Violette, president and founder of Free ME from Lung Cancer. “The funding will help alleviate financial burdens, ensuring patients can access vital treatment and spend precious time with loved ones, rather than worrying about getting to medical appointments.”

Free ME from Lung Cancer is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Maine and beyond. Its programs include early lung cancer screening, research, support for single-family low-income homeowners needing radon air abatement systems and expanded access to transportation and lodging for cancer care.
