Supporting our veterans beyond the uniform

To the Editor;

As we honored our veterans this November, it’s important to recognize that their service doesn’t end when they return home. Many face new challenges — whether it’s finding employment, modifying their homes for accessibility or caring for loved ones. AARP is proud to stand with veterans and their families by offering a wide range of free resources tailored to their unique needs.

Veterans seeking work, those needing home modifications due to service-related disabilities or veterans wishing to learn more about local resources, can find that and much more through the AARP site entirely dedicated to veterans. Local VA offices in Maine are located in Augusta and Portland, and additional local veteran centers can assist further. The Veterans crisis line is 988.

Caregivers — often spouses or family members — can find meaningful resources through AARP’s Military Caregiving Guide and Financial Workbook, which help organize care plans, manage stress, and navigate complex financial decisions. Area Agencies on Aging can also serve as a gateway to many services and supports throughout Maine.

These tools can be a great place to start for veterans and their families. To learn more, visit aarp.org/veterans or contact your local VA center.

Let’s continue to serve those who served us.
