GFWC/Miosac Club news

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The GFWC/Miosac Club met Nov. 4. In the absence of President Laurie Ducat, Vice President Minnie McCormick conducted the meeting.

She called the meeting to order, thanking hostesses Betsey Ryan and Rheba Michaud. Ryan led the Collect, Pledge of Allegiance and Americans Creed. Secretary Diane Leighton took roll call with 10 members responding. She then read the minutes of the last meeting with no errors. Three members were reported as ill.

There was no correspondence. Treasurer Anne Cress gave the treasurer’s report. Roxy McGlauflin reported the next meeting will be Nov. 15. There was no program scheduled but Suzanne Raymond announced Domestic Violence Chair Harmony Ingraham is available and will be the speaker.

40-YEAR MEMBERSHIP — Roxy McGlauflin, back, being presented an over 40-year membership certificate from Minnie McCormick, VP.

McCormick reported there were two club articles in the Piscataquis Observer. We appreciate them doing that!

Cress brought three more blankets for the Veterans Project. Several were brought to the last meeting and these will be delivered when club members go to help with the Thanksgiving boxes. This year veterans will be able to choose what foods they would like.

McCormick announced we have a 4-year-old boy to purchase things for through the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Christmas campaign. Members put their donations in a bag as it was passed around — over $200 was collected.Ducat, Kathy Ryder and Brenda Quiet will do the shopping. Some members adopt a child on their own, this is an annual event!

With all business finished, Program Chair McCormick gave a history of the club. It was organized in 1936 when Senior Cosmopolitan Club members wanted to form a Junior Club.  Charter members gathered and formed the Miosac Club meaning Modern Ideals of Service and Culture. They later formed Molasto and Mocutoc clubs. The Miosac Club is the only surviving club.

HOSTESSES — Hostesses for the evening were Betsy Ryan, left, and Rheba Michaud.

Miosac Club raised money from yard sales, rummage sales and donated to many projects. The biggest one was a maternity wing at Mayo Hospital. Club member Lil Herring was superintendent at that time.

Other projects were the Burns-Johnson Tennis Court, sponsored a foreign exchange student, donated  piano to Foxcroft Academy, flags, sponsored a swim program, a health program for children and assisted the Foxcroft Academy band for a trip to Romania. Dot Warren established an outdoor lab at the Morton Avenue school that is still maintained. They also were able to get the 10 o’clock alarm silenced! It was disturbing people at the hospital.

We continue to raise money and support several causes. Money is raised by doing yard sales and other fundraising projects. Some members attend conferences and conventions. GFWC Maine President Raymond attended the International Convention in Utah this year.

Anyone wishing to join this very busy club can call any member and ask to be included.

McCormick presented a certificate to Roxy McGlauflin for her 43 years of service to the Miosac Club.

After the meeting members made cards for the veterans. These will be delivered when  members go to help with the Thanksgiving dinner.

Delicious refreshments were served by hostesses Ryan and Michaud.
