Why would we want Question 1?
To the Editor;
Question 1 will make it harder for Mainers to vote, plain and simple.
Why, exactly, would we want to do that?
In the last presidential election, 74% of Mainers voted, one of the highest rates in the country. What’s the agenda of those who want to reduce that, rather than expand that?
Question 1 will reduce secure drop boxes. Why would we want to do that?
Question 1 will remove each town’s option to pay postage for mail-in ballots. They don’t have to do it now! They can if they want to. Why would we want to do this?
Question 1 provides for the right to “make other changes to our elections.” Say again? What changes?
Under the veneer of requiring voter ID, the framers of Question 1 have focussed on every possible way to make it hard for Mainers to vote; and, even that’s not enough. More, more, more and none of your business, voters, what else we choose to do.
Look, your vote is of immeasurable value. Don’t let it be taken away when it’s the one thing your reps know they have to work for (and many would really rather not). Make them work. Keep safe what is your voice — your vote. No on 1.
