Piscataquis County Democrats continue Piscataquis Regional Food Center support

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Andrea Thurlow and Cindy Freeman Cyr, representing Piscataquis County Democrats, visited the Piscataquis Regional Food Center on Oct. 27 to make a donation of food and a check for $1,000. This brings the total donated by local Democrats to $11,850 over the last few years in addition to many boxes, cans and bags of food.

“This donation comes at a critical time for the families served here” according to PRFC Executive Director Kelly Sirimoglu as SNAP benefits (formerly called food stamps) will end on Nov. 1st because of the government shutdown. There are “contingency reserves” that could fund this critical program, but the USDA has not released them.

In the meantime, the PRFC will continue to provide food to local families whose numbers increase every week. Last week alone 23 new households were enrolled. The Center had been serving 352 households composed of older residents, children, veterans, people with disabilities and working people every month prior to the increase. Other community groups and individuals are encouraged to support the PRFC as the need for assistance increases.
