Someone carved initials into the sign at the summit of Katahdin

By Ethan Andrews, Bangor Daily News Staff

Baxter State Park law enforcement rangers are trying to figure out who carved their initials into the iconic wooden sign at the summit of Katahdin.

The letters “H.M.” and “J.M” were carved into the middle of the sign that marks the top of the mile-high mountain.

INITIALS — A pair of initials were recently carved into the weathered sign at the summit of Katahdin.

The summit sign has been replaced a number of times over the years. In a photo of the current sign provided by the park, the weathered traces of other initials are visible.

If you saw someone carve the initials, have relevant information, or if you are the person who carved into the sign, you can call Baxter State Park Headquarters at 207-723-5140, seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
