The order of Maine’s 2025 November ballot questions has been set
By Leela Stockley, Bangor Daily News Staff
The order of referendums on the November 2025 statewide ballot has been announced.
The ballot question order was determined through a public lottery held by the Maine Secretary of State’s office.
Under Maine law, questions must be arranged in the following order: carry-over measures from a previous election, people’s veto questions, initiated measures, bond issues, constitutional amendments and other legislatively proposed referendums.
Within each grouping, questions must be arranged in a random order determined by a selection process conducted in public. All questions must be numbered sequentially.
This year, Mainers will be facing just two statewide referendums. Below is the order of the initiatives as they will appear on the ballot:
Question 1
“Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes, limit the number of drop boxes, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting, and make other changes to our elections?”
Question one pertains to the push for Voter ID. Read our coverage of the ballot measure at https://www.bangordailynews.com/topic/voter-id/.
Question 2
“Do you want to allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from having dangerous weapons if law enforcement, family, or household members show that the person poses a significant danger of causing physical injury to themselves or others?”
Question two pertains to a proposed “red flag” gun control measure. Read our coverage of the ballot measure at https://www.bangordailynews.com/2025/03/07/politics/elections/maine-red-flag-law-referendum-ballot-qualifies/.
