PCSWCD Hazelnut Harvest event

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting our annual Hazelnut Harvest event on Aug. 26 at one of our community forests, the Law Farm Nature Trails in Dover-Foxcroft. This event date is contingent on external factors, and the date is subject to change. The best way to stay up-to-date with potential changes is to register and/or by checking our Facebook page.

This event will be held in collaboration with Sam Brown. Brown is a member of the PCSWCD Board, and is actively involved with many local conservation events and efforts. He has a vetted interest in the advancement of intelligent and adaptive agriculture and forestry in Piscataquis County.

Hazelnut harvesting is a unique process that requires attentiveness. While this event will focus on the physical gathering of hazelnuts, there is an extensive process behind their harvest. Brown is well versed on the process, and will also be demonstrating how to open the nuts once they are dehusked. The harvest is contingent on external factors, as we must get to the nuts before the birds and squirrels. Again, please stay updated with our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/www.piscataquisswcd.org as we want plenty of people to help with this harvest!

This event also serves as a Tree Farm Stewardship Hub Annual Gathering. The Maine Tree Farm Program’s Stewardship Hubs are local networks of community members who come together to share knowledge, experiences, and practices in sustainable forestry. These hubs are meant to connect all landowners and whether you are just starting out or experienced, these gatherings are the perfect opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and network with others!

Directions to the Law Farm Nature Trails will be shared with registration confirmation. Registration is required. This is a free event, so bring the whole family! Please visit our website www.piscataquisswcd.org to register.

We are so very excited for this annual event. This event is so simple and enjoyable! It will be a great opportunity to learn the intricacies of hazelnut harvest, and see one of our local, public forests. This is an outdoor event, so bring some bug spray and wear outdoor attire. We’ll see you there!
