One person has died and one has been seriously injured following a crash on Route 16 in Alton on Tuesday morning.

At around 10 a.m., state police troopers responded to a head-on collision near the Alton Grocery, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Officials believe that a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu had been southbound before crossing the centerline and striking a northbound 2011 Buick Regal, driven by 70-year-old Peter McCormack of Alton.

Matthew Parsons, 42, of Lagrange who had been driving the Malibu, died at the scene of the crash.

McCormack was transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The area of the crash on Route 16 was closed for several hours during the initial investigation, but has since been opened to traffic.
