PCHS girls, Foxcroft boys fall in state tennis championships

LEWISTON — The Piscataquis Community High School girls tennis team fell in the Class C championship and the Foxcroft Academy boys tennis team lost in the Class B championship on Wednesday, June 11 at Bates College.

PCHS (11-5) fell 5-0 to Maranacook Community High School of Readfield (15-1). The Pony boys (15-1) were defeated for the first time this season 5-0 by Yarmouth High School (16-0) which captured the state title for the sixth consecutive season.

In the late afternoon the Black Bears swept three singles and a pair of doubles matches against the Pirates. No. 1 singles senior Claire Dwyer over junior Arianna Crosby 6-3, 6-4. No. 2 singles freshman Lydia Garafalo over senior Khloe Kimball 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 singles sophomore Julia Thaller over senior Gabriella Koscielyn 6-0, 6-1.

CLASS B RUNNER-UP — The Foxcroft Academy boys are the 2025 Class B tennis runner-ups after falling to Yarmouth High School 5-0 in the state championship on June 11 at Bates College in Lewiston. The Ponies appeared in the final for the second time in school history (2023).

No. 1 doubles sophomore Leah Hildebrandt and senior Ava Candage over sophomore Karrigan Wilson and junior Bella Buhne 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 doubles seniors Molly Woodford and Lilly Brossey over junior Audrey Chadbourne and Ava Goulette 6-3, 6-4. 

Maranacook won the program’s second state championship, joining the 2023 Class C crown.

The state championship berth was the first for a PCHS girls team since the 1992 field hockey team claimed that year’s Class C championship.

Earlier in the day on June 11 the Yarmouth boys swept the three singles matches and two doubles matches. 

No. 1 singles senior Andre Vilette over Jerry Nguyen 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 singles sophomore James Hartnett over junior Max Balliet 6-2, 6-3. No. 3 singles junior Alexander Gordon over senior Fynn Eigen 6-4, 6-4.

No. 1 doubles juniors Aidan Forrest and Aiden Brooks over senior Tom Nguyen and junior Lucas Machado 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 singles senior Chris Augur and junior John Nicholas over juniors Henry Holman and Beckett Taylor 6-0, 6-0.  

Foxcroft appeared in its second boys tennis state championship, doing likewise in 2023 when that Yarmouth team earned the title for the fourth year during the now six-year championship run. The Clippers’ 2025 crown is the seventh overall in program history (2009 and 2019-25 with no matches being played in the spring of 2020 amidst the pandemic).
