Losing the dam far outweighs the price

To the Editor;

As Dover-Foxcroft residents head to the polls to vote — once again — on the future of the dam, I urge you to remember why we chose to keep it in the first place.

The dam is more than a historic structure; it creates the beautiful impoundment we all know and love as the Piscataquis River. Without it, we’re left with nothing but a muddy stream cutting through the heart of our town. Some believe that nature will eventually restore it into something better — but I’m not convinced. And if it ever does, it likely won’t happen in our lifetimes.

Yes, preserving the dam will affect our taxes. But the cost will be spread out over many years, not felt all at once. I understand it’s a big ask, but what we lose without the dam far outweighs the price.

New residents often say it was the river’s beauty that first drew them to Dover-Foxcroft — it’s a defining feature of our community. Beyond its scenic value, the river is a vital resource for activities like kayaking, skating, canoe races, snowmobiling, skiing, fishing and even seaplane access for inland fisheries.

We’ve been told by ASF that the appearance of the river, once the water is drawn down, is a close representation of what we can expect if the dam is removed. Do we really want a barren, shallow stream running through the center of our town?

Please think carefully before you vote. This may be our last chance to get it right.

Join me, vote yes on question 4.
