Documentary on Maine homelessness returns to Center Theatre
DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre is proud to present an encore screening of the documentary film “Building Hope” at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 11. The film explores the stories of Mainers caught in the daily crisis of homelessness. With the help of leading state advocates, many have risen above their circumstances to find housing and jobs and are becoming productive members of society. Others, due to mental illness and substance use disorder, have yet to succeed.
The film was first screened at the Center Theatre in January and the attendees were enthusiastic about bringing the film back a second time.
“The people who came to see ‘Building Hope’ were impressed with the movie and its message of hope,” said Patrick Myers, Center Theatre executive director. “There was agreement that the theatre should bring the movie back again so that more people in our community could see the movie and learn about the problem and the solutions that are available.”
Myers said that the film will be followed by a panel discussion with experts in the field of homelessness in Maine and the local community.
There is no charge to attend the screening of “Building Hope” but donations are being accepted to offset the cost of the screening and to help support screenings at other theaters around the state.
The film was produced by Richard Kane and Melody Lewis-Kane of Kane Lewis Productions in Sedwick. The documentary was fiscally sponsored by Downeast Community Partners with the support of the Opportunity Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Castine, WERU Community Radio, the Maine Community Foundation, Heart of Maine United Way and many generous individual donors.
