HJ Crosby Community Band rehearsals

DEXTER — The Harold J. Crosby Community Band has resumed the “Terrific Thursdays” weekly evening rehearsals from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center 8-12 Main St in Dexter, enter at the municipal parking lot. The center gives a dedicated home to the band and also has a Music FunShop for instrumental loan and repairs, an art gallery and a newly added “giving table” to share items with those in need.

Additionally, optional small group rehearsals meet on what is affectionately called “Tootin’ Tuesdays” at 1 p.m. at 59 Libby Hill Road in Newport (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building) to help members feel more comfortable playing. This also gives a daytime option for those who struggle with night time driving.

Memorial Day kicks off the band’s summer concert series with patriotic music. Then, it takes the show on the road on Thursday evenings and select weekends adding a mix of popular, classical, Broadway, rock and marches. Pieces this year include “Jailhouse Rock” and “The Sound of Silence”. New and returning players of all ages and abilities are welcome to join us as we play at picturesque parks and even the Maine Red Hot Dog Festival!

A volunteer-operated non-profit organization, the Harold J. Crosby Community Band is a wind, brass and percussion ensemble sponsored by the Carl R. Cuthbert Community Band Foundation. Participation is always free, but donations are accepted to assist with operating costs, including the renovation and upkeep of the Performing Arts Center.
