Fidium announces new fiber builds in Maine
PORTLAND — Fidium, Maine’s best internet provider according to CNET, will bring multi-gig, symmetrical speed fiber internet service to Bath, Brownville, Bucksport, Calais, Easton, Eddington, Gorham, Grand Isle, Lubec, Monson, Old Town, Orono, Richmond, Van Buren, Wells, Woodland, and Yarmouth. Fiber expansion is already underway in Boothbay, Brewer, Edgecomb, Fort Fairfield, Gardiner, Gouldsboro, Kingman, Lincoln, North Whitefield, Old Orchard Beach, Orland, Saco, Waldoboro, Winter Harbor, Winterport and Wiscasset. Fidium will deliver new fiber broadband access to more than 100,000 additional homes and businesses in Maine by year’s end, extending its total reach to more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the state.
Fidium is upgrading internet access for these communities, bringing all the significant benefits that come with fiber broadband access, including improved educational outcomes, reduced healthcare costs and enhanced economic opportunities. Fiber connectivity also offers the best experience for streaming entertainment, without the irritation of buffering.
“We cut the cord a few years ago to just stream TV,” said Kandi-Lee Hoy, a Fidium customer in South Portland. “Since Fidium showed up, our service has been great. We stream a lot of entertainment, YouTube, streaming TV, streaming hockey games, it all works very well without glitches or outages.”
Turbocharged speeds delivered through Fidium’s fiber internet service are matched only by the fast pace at which Fidium constructs its fiber-optic network to connect communities. More than 300,000 Maine homes and businesses have already been connected by Fidium in the last three years. Fidium connected communities include Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Bar Harbor, Belfast, Biddeford, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Caribou, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Eastport, Ellsworth, Falmouth, Farmington, Lewiston, Lisbon, Millinocket, Portland, Rangeley, Rockland, Scarborough, Skowhegan, South Portland, Thomaston, Topsham, Waterville, Winslow, Westbrook, York and dozens more.
“We worked to find a solid pathway for our residents and businesses to access dependable, competitive, symmetrical high-speed fiber broadband connectivity,” Mary Mortier, city councilor and broadband committee member for the City of Belfast. “Fidium made a commitment to the council last fall, to start connecting interested new customers in February and going live by March. They did just that. As a thriving small city, our economic development and future success depend on this absolutely needed infrastructure. Our community now has the opportunity to fully engage in the modern world with faster, symmetrical, budget-friendly, reliable, no-contract internet service from Fidium.”
Fiber broadband drives economic growth, in particular for rural communities, increasing business growth by 213 percent and leading to 44 percent higher GDP. For individuals, fiber access resulted in self-employment growth of 10 percent and increased per capita income by 18 percent. Fiber also increases real estate values, as single-family homes with fiber access have a 4.9 percent higher value than those without.
“As the incumbent provider throughout most of Maine, Fidium continues to drive our state and our communities forward, ensuring Mainers from Wells to Old Town and beyond have the best possible internet service at a price that makes sense,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of Market Development for Fidium. “Our community-wide fiber networks transform how people live and work, powering new entertainment, educational and economic opportunities that were not previously accessible.”
