Grow Your Own Organic Garden class

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will hold its annual Grow Your Own Organic Garden class in person at locations across Maine for the first time since 2019. These include from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2 at the Piscataquis Valley Adult Education Cooperative in Dover-Foxcroft.

In this class participants will learn the basics of organic gardening — such as supporting soil and plant health, starting seeds indoors and outdoors, interplanting, pest management, watering and harvesting. The class includes plenty of time for participants to ask questions and connect with one another about shared experiences in their gardening journeys.

Participants will leave the class equipped with core knowledge of how to grow an organic garden, connected to resources and community members that will help them grow an organic garden, and feeling ready to take the first steps toward doing so. Additionally, participants will receive seeds to start in their homes and communities!

“MOFGA has offered Grow Your Own Organic Garden at hubs across the state since the 1990s, and this is the first time MOFGA will be offering it in person since the pandemic,” says Madi Whaley, MOFGA’s educational programs coordinator. “We, and the educators we work with, are excited to connect with gardeners, especially first-time gardeners, through this class.”

Pricing and age requirements vary by location. This class is appropriate for beginner and seasoned gardeners alike. MOFGA is collaborating with community partners, and farm and garden educators to offer this class. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, formed in 1971, is the oldest and largest state organic organization in the country. MOFGA’s vision is a future where local organic farming nourishes all people, and sustains thriving ecosystems, healthy communities, and fair economies. We accomplish this through our mission to transform our food system by supporting farmers, empowering people to feed their communities, and advocating for an organic future. Learn more at mofga.org.
