Why is it important to listen to your heart this February?

BREWER — February is American Heart Month, so let us ask: When was the last time you truly listened to your heart?

It may sound a bit cliché, but it’s crucial to pay attention to your heart’s health.  If something feels off or you have a family history of heart disease, now is the time to talk with your healthcare provider and take proactive steps.

We all know there are simple yet effective actions you can take to maintain a healthy heart.

“Since 2000, cardiovascular disease has been steadily increasing in the US and is projected to continue rising in the next 30 years.” says Chae Choi, MD, a cardiologist with Northern Light Health. “Cardiovascular disease often begins many years or even decades before symptoms appear. Preventing heart disease starts with healthy eating, staying active, managing stress, avoiding smoking, treating high blood pressure and high cholesterol.”

One common misconception is that heart disease affects men more than women. In reality, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US. That’s why we encourage our staff and community to participate in the national initiative to raise awareness of women’s heart disease by wearing red on the first Friday of February, which this year lands on Feb. 7.

“With increased awareness and prevention, we can dispel the misconception that heart disease primarily affects men and help reverse concerning trends among women,” adds Dr. Choi.

This February, take a moment to give your heart the attention it deserves. Whether it’s finally asking your healthcare provider about that lingering concern or starting a new exercise and nutrition routine tailored to your needs, even small steps can make a big difference for your heart and overall health.
