Walk-in mammograms to be offered in Milo and Corinth

Maine’s only mobile mammography unit is about to achieve another new milestone: walk-in screenings offered to all women, without an appointment.

Walk-in screenings will be offered on Friday, Jan. 10 at Northern Light Primary Care, Milo, 135 Park Street, and on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Northern Light Primary Care, Corinth, 492 Main Street. Walk-in screenings will be available between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Northern Light Health’s first-in-Maine mobile mammogram service has screened nearly 250 women in Greenville, Jackman, Monson, Corinth, and Unity since opening in April. Until now, screenings have been offered by appointment only. The mobile mammography team hopes that the walk-in option will encourage more women to get screened.

MOBILE MAMMOGRAMS — Casey Whittemore, lead mammography tech, performs an exam inside Northern Light Health’s mobile mammogram unit.

“We’re excited to offer this new option because we know that it’s easy to put off scheduling an appointment. Traveling to get screened at a hospital can be difficult, especially during the winter months. And sometimes, life just gets in the way. Walk-in screening removes all of the barriers to getting a potentially lifesaving mammogram,” says Kacy Wakefield, community women’s health navigator, Northern Light CA Dean and Mayo Hospitals.

The mobile mammography unit is spacious, temperature controlled, and has the latest 3D technology, just like a hospital-based mammography service.

Walk-in mammograms are for routine screening only, and one year and one day must have passed since the patient’s last screening. Mammograms are recommended for most women beginning at age 40 because early detection allows treatment to begin sooner when cancer is easier to treat.
