Teenage boys help evacuate home during fire

ATKINSON — The homeowners of an Atkinson home escaped harm after three teenaged boys responded to the scene early Wednesday morning, Jan. 1.

According to the Maine fire marshal’s office, the boys had discovered the fire at 110 North Stagecoach Road and helped the homeowners escape. When officials arrived at the scene at around 1:44 a.m., the farmhouse and attached barn were completely engulfed in flames.

“Had [the boys] not been in the right place at the right time, this could have been a much more tragic fire event,” State Fire Marshal Shawn Esler said.

Because of the extent of the damage, it is not possible to determine the cause of the fire at this point in time. An investigation is ongoing, but officials are considering that electrical appliances may have sparked the fire.
