Dexter girls stay perfect with semifinal shutout over Shead

DEXTER — A very fast start with three goals in the first four-plus minutes helped second-seeded Dexter Regional High School defeat No. 3 Shead High School of Eastport 5-0 in a girls 8-player North semifinal on Nov. 1. The three goals would be more than enough as the now 16-0 Tigers posted the team’s seventh shutout of the season, and second in as many playoff games.

Dexter — the team moved to the 8-player class this season after having been in the 11-player game at Class C North/East for decades — advances to the regional final set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5 on the turf at Cameron Stadium in Bangor against fourth seed George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill. The Eagles knocked off top seed Hodgdon 2-1 in the other girls 8-player semifinal.

SEMIFINAL VICTORY — Dexter junior Jazmin Channon corrals the ball away from Shead junior Dana Fredette during the Nov. 1 8-player North semifinal on Nov. 1 in Dexter. The second seed Tigers had a 6-0 win over the No. 3 Tigers of Eastport to advance to Tuesday’s regional final against fourth-seeded George Stevens.

The Tigers are the only team to defeat 13-2 George Stevens in 2024. Dexter won at home 8-1 on Sept. 16 and had a 3-2 victory in Blue Hill on Oct. 18. The berth in a regional championship is the first for the Dexter girls since the 2017 team won the Class C North title.

Sophomore Brookelin Dorman got the scoring started with an unassisted goal on a shot inside the left post just 1:44 into the game against Shead. The Tiger team from eastern Washington County had won four in a row and seven of eight heading in and finishes the year with a record of 12-4.

TWO-GOAL DAY — Senior Abilene Corson breaks away with a clowder of Tiger teammates and Shead sophomore Danika Howze behind her. Corson scored in both halves, as did junior Desiree Adams, in Dexter’s 5-0 win.

Just 38 seconds later Dexter found the goal again as senior Abilene Corson scored for the 2-0 advantage, a lead that would turn to be insurmountable for the visitors.

Soon after the 26:00 mark came goal No. 3. Corson faked the defender and passed to junior Desiree Adams who found the mark for the goal and 3-0 lead in just over four minutes of gametime.

MAKE A MOVE — Sophomore Brookelin Dorman makes a move to get away from Shead eighth-grader Izzabella Clark with Dexter junior Jazmin Channon in the background.

Adams and Corson both scored again in the second half at the 21:34- and 12:20-marks respectively.

Dexter put 14 shots on goal, Shead senior Adriana Fenderson made a game-high half dozen saves, while the Tiger defense allowed just three. Sophomore keeper Adalea Gudroe made one save with this coming in the first half as on the other two shots both went outside the posts.

An 8-0 advantage in corner kicks also helped Dexter earn the semifinal victory.
