Pine Tree Hospice launches programs in ‘Wishes and Living Wills’, ‘Grief Calls’, ‘Grief Support for Children’

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Pine Tree Hospice, Piscataquis County’s only state licensed non-medical volunteer organization serving those with life-limiting conditions, care partners, and those grieving, is excited to announce the successful launch of two innovative programs.

“The Wishes and Living Wills Workshop” and “Grief Calls” were both developed to meet acutely unmet needs of those grieving losses in our service area. Additionally, Pine Tree Hospice has been working with Center for Grieving Children and local schools to identify the best way to support staff and students affected by grief with a goal to develop programming in early 2025. All programs are part of Pine Tree Hospice’s ongoing commitment to provide support, education, and resources in the communities we serve.

The “Wishes and Living Wills Workshops” equip families with tools and guidance for making informed decisions. The workshops empower individuals to express their wishes clearly, ensuring that loved ones are aligned and prepared. The unique workshop covers questions about advanced directives, various types of powers of attorney, funeral arrangements, and most importantly how to “have the conversation.” This program has been offered to the community in Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford, and Greenville with more being planned into 2025. The workshop can also be offered to civic, professional, church, or other types of groups.

“Grief Calls” support those who are suffering from the death of a person or pet with telephone calls from trained Pine Tree Hospice volunteers. A call from a friendly, compassionate voice helps to allay feelings of loneliness and sadness. Since the program began in March, over 150 calls have been made.

“We recognize that not everyone feels comfortable attending an in-person grief support group. These calls have also allowed us to provide support immediately instead of putting someone on a waiting list for the next group,” said Kristen Wortman, executive director of Pine Tree Hospice.
