Free theater workshops for high school students

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Center Theatre is excited to announce a new opportunity for high school students interested in theater: a five-session workshop series focused on creating original scenes and monologues. The workshop will be led by the Maine Alliance for Arts Education’s visiting artist and instructor, Jeri Pitcher.

The workshops will take place from 3-5 p.m. on Oct. 18 and 25 and Nov. 1, 15, and 22 at the Center Theatre, 20 East Main Street. Thanks to the generous support of the Maine Humanities Council, registration is free.

Devising Theater, also known as collaborative creation, is a unique form of theater where the performance is created collaboratively by a group, rather than relying on a traditional playwright. Through a process of improvisation, games, writing exercises and group discussion, participants will generate original scenes and monologues and discover the power of collective storytelling.

“It’s a time to laugh, explore creativity, and give expression to life experiences in this five-session workshop,” said Pitcher. “Meet and connect with other creative students while devising theater. Participants will create original scenes and monologues through collective brainstorming, journal writing, theater exercises and improvisation. The focus of this workshop series is to work collectively and create original theater as a group.”

Pitcher is a highly experienced teaching artist, director and educator with over 25 years of experience leading theater residencies in Maine schools. She was a founding faculty member of the Maine Arts Academy and has worked extensively as a teaching artist with the Theater at Monmouth.

The Devising Theater workshops are open to all high school students in the region. Space is limited; interested students are encouraged to register early. To register or learn more about this exciting opportunity, visit the Center Theatre website at www.centertheatre.org, call the theatre at 207-564-8943, or stop by in person.

The Center Theatre is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to engage and inspire by making arts, education, and entertainment accessible to our rural communities. The mission of the Maine Alliance for Arts Education is to promote and encourage education in all of the arts for all Maine students.
