FA girls soccer improves to 5-0 with shutout vs. MCI

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Foxcroft Academy girls soccer team continued its perfect start to the 2024 season with a 3-0 victory vs. Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield on the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 23. The Ponies, who posted the team’s second straight shutout and have allowed no more than one goal in all five matches, improved to 5-0 with the win over the Huskies (the team dropped to 1-6 with its second consecutive loss).

A year ago Foxcroft got victory No. 5 in the eighth game of the season on the way to a record of 7-6-1 and a berth in the Class C North quarterfinal round.

PAIR OF GOALS — Foxcroft Academy freshman Nola Mason scored twice in the second half during a Sept. 23 game vs. MCI. Mason’s pair of goals helped the Ponies win 3-0 to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Thirteen-plus minutes into the first half Foxcroft had the first of its three corner kicks with junior Addy Menz putting the ball in play from the right. The Ponies kept the ball on the MCI side of the field after several shot attempts toward the goal. Senior Lea Schnetzer eventually passed to junior Celine Rush, who was positioned just outside the box. Rush’s kick went in to put Foxcroft on the scoreboard at the 26:45-mark.

In the second half Schnetzer passed to freshman Nola Mason as Mason broke away from the Husky defense. Mason stopped and with ample time and space, paused to set her shot which went in at the 30:30-mark for the 2-0 advantage.

Less than 100 seconds later Schnetzer — who assisted on all three of her team’s goals — and Mason connected again. Mason received her teammate’s pass and got a shot off through a pair of defenders and in as Foxcroft took a 3-0 lead with 28:54 left on the clock in the second half.

Foxcroft and MCI are scheduled to play again in Pittsfield two weeks after the game in Dover-Foxcroft at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7.
