Piscataquis Region Retired Educators Association news

DOVER-FOXCROFT — While the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church was getting an uplift on the outside, 10 members and two interested retirees enjoyed a “Chair Yoga” session with  yoga instructor Becky Rollins on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The moves, groans, and hilarious laughter filled the dining hall for a 45-minute routine.

During the business meeting the secretary’s report was read by Secretary Janie Lander. On a motion by Jane Conroy and a 2nd by Carol Sherburne it was approved.

The financial team of Priscilla Higgins and Nancy Grant have reconciled both accounts and added a total of $385.51 to the coffers. Our loose change collection is adding approximately $15 each month toward our educational awards. Members were reminded that dues are to be paid in September of each year so bring your funds to the next meeting. The financial statements were approved on a motion by Judy Dow and a 2nd by Linda Howard.

CHAIR YOGA – Instructor Becky Rollins led a dozen retired educators in “Chair Yoga” at the recent Piscataquis Region Retired Educators Association meeting.

There was no formal Legislative Report, but Conroy reminded us to be informed and ask questions as we enter election season. Sign up for “Under the Dome” — weekly updates from the state level. Talk with current educators regarding their contracts and  negotiations.

On a motion by Karen Longevin and a 2nd by Conroy it was moved to change the term “necrology” in our by-laws to “remembrance”. This year’s service to remember those citizens in our local area who have made an impact in the lives of children in their lifetime will be in October. As secretary, Lander will gather the names of those individuals and is looking for another member to help with the formalities of the service.

In old business our quilt raffle is progressing, albeit slowly. We have plenty of tickets to sell if anyone is interested in taking some to sell to friends and family. Lander has the quilt, tablecloth, poster, and tickets ready at a moment’s notice if anyone is willing to sit at an area event or business to sell more tickets. We are just over $330 in sales. This money will go to Helping Hands with Heart for their assistance to needy families in our area.

The program committee has drafted a variety of programs for 2025 for the fourth Tuesday of each month from April to November. Lander circulated a DRAFT PRREA pamphlet and anticipates being able to update the document so that Conroy can take it with her to a state level meeting next week.

The educational awards committee met prior to update the guidelines and dates as a candidate from Greenville will be this year’s recipient.  Lander will contact Superintendent Kelly MacFadyen to get the ball rolling.

Members were reminded that we have a team that will be participating in the trivia night at The Commons on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer our group on to victory. Helping Hands with Hearts is hosting this fun event!

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Bear’s Den in Dover-Foxcroft. This will be our annual silent auction. Do you have an item or two that someone else might enjoy, maybe it was a gift at one time and you no longer want nor need it? Recycling is encouraged!  All items will be displayed on a table with bidding sheets beside each. Bring your funds as it is also “Pay Your Dues” month. See you there!
