Getting started with babysitting? Here are five tips for new sitters to know

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Babysitting is a rewarding way for pre-teens and teens to gain valuable work experience and earn extra money. But it’s a big responsibility, and it’s important for sitters to know the basics of caring for children and what to do in an emergency. If you’re thinking about getting started in babysitting, here are five tips to know:

1. Think safety. It’s your most important responsibility.

Keep a list of important contacts available, including phone numbers to poison control, the child’s parents, and a backup contact, in addition to 911. Sitters should ask parents for a list of the child’s medications, allergies, and pertinent medical issues.

2. Plan a few activities beforehand.

It’s fun to play games and do crafts! A good way to build a great connection with children is to engage and play with them. Know the parents’ rules for playtime and have a few age-appropriate ideas in mind before you arrive. Read a story, play a board game, have them show you their toys, or watch their favorite show.

3. Ask questions.

Write down any questions you have before you arrive and be sure to discuss them with a parent. Know how to contact a parent if a question or concern comes up while you’re babysitting. Think about questions to ask the kids, too! Ask them about their likes and dislikes, their parents, and how school is going (if applicable).

4. Be reliable and flexible.

The family is likely hiring you because they have a time-sensitive need, so be sure to arrive on time and follow through with your obligations. You’ll build a reputation as a reliable sitter by showing that you are patient, calm under pressure, and can solve problems.

5. Take a babysitting course

A great way to learn the basics needed to be a responsible sitter is to take a course! Safe Sitter® courses for young teens, grades 6-8, provide hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques, including first aid, infant and child choking rescue, and CPR. Students also receive instruction on how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior, and how to run a babysitting business. Northern Light Mayo Hospital is offering this course on Aug. 16-17.
