PCSWCD wild edible foraging workshop

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Demand for foraging workshops are high and for the sixth year, the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District is ready to bring this educational opportunity to the region again. The 2024 foraging workshop will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Law Farm Nature Trails.

PCSWCD Executive Director Sarah Robinson will work alongside Dustin Small, a local forager and friendly face from Bissell Brothers Three Rivers, to bring a unique and fun foraging walk along the Law Farm Nature Trails. The Law Farm Nature Trails is one of PCSWCD’s public lands, is located on Lee Cemetery Road and has a 1-mile looping trail that is surrounded by forests, wetlands and fields — lots of diversity for finding trail nibbles!

Robinson is excited to share what she has learned about foraging over the years and her familiarity with the Law Farm Nature Trails will help guide us through the property. Small has been foraging fiddleheads and berries for almost his whole life. When you live in Maine, those are two favorite finds. Small started specializing in mushrooms in 2014 and after many requests, PCSWCD is finally able to share this in our programming.

He describes his favorite thing about foraging as “something that gives us a reason to get outside, slow down, and observe our beautiful environment here in Maine. You see the change progress throughout the season and learn a lot along the way.”

Bring a basket and be prepared to learn about mushrooms and foraging in Piscataquis County! Organizers can’t wait to walk with you!
