Vandermast wins pair of PVC freshmen track titles

HAMPDEN — Athletes from four area high schools took part in the Penobscot Valley Conference outdoor track and field freshmen championships on May 28 at Hampden Academy.

Foxcroft Academy’s Eamon Vandermast won both the 100 and 200 meter races. In the first race Vandermast’s time of 11.90 seconds was the fastest of the day as he was the only sprinter to break 12 seconds. He earned top 200 honors in a time of 24.22 seconds.

Vandermast anchored the sixth-place 4×100 relay team as Carter Straehle, Ethan Eakright, Joesph Knapp, and Vandermast combined for a time of 52.77 seconds. Vandermast also came in 10th in the shot put at 29 feet, 6.75 inches.

Knapp won the 400 in a time of 56.65 seconds. He also came in fourth in the 800 at 2:14.83.

Foxcroft also had top 10 performances from Steven Li, who was fifth in the shot put with his throw of 32-10.5; and John Seo, seventh in the 400 at 1:07.26.

Phoenix Brown of Piscataquis Community High School had a seventh-place finish in the triple jump at 31-11.50. He also came in eighth in the 200 at 27.20 seconds.

In the girls’ freshmen championship, Foxcroft Academy’s Jasmine Hall had a second-place throw in the shot put at 30-04. 

The Ponies’ Marion Deitz came in second in the high jump at 4-04.

The PCHS 4×400 relay had the day’s second-fastest time. Olivia Goodwin, Taylor Herrick, Emma Folsom, and Hailee Marshall together ran the event in 5:07.60.

Individually, Folsom placed fourth in the shot put at 25-07.50 and she was 10th in the discus at 63 feet.

Marshall came in eighth and ninth in the 100 and 200 with respective times of 14.92 and 31.48 seconds.

Shelby Grant of PCHS also had a top 10 performance by finishing ninth in the long jump standings at 11-11.75.
