Evening Social with artist Bray on Thursday
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Maine Highlands Council for the Arts is honored to be welcoming Alan Bray as our featured artist at an Evening Social on Thursday, Aug. 3 from 5-7 p.m. at the Central Hall Commons, 152 East Main Street. Bray will give a brief talk about his life and work, and show some examples of his artwork.
Bray is a well-known local artist and native Mainer who grew up in Monson and was deeply influenced by the surrounding woods and landscapes. He studied at the Art Institute of Boston and the University of Southern Maine, and traveled to Florence, Italy to further his art studies. He has lived in Sangerville for over 50 years, and continues his life’s work of painting nature and the world around him in his own particular style, using casein, a milk-based tempera paint. His work is technically complex, but engaging the eye in landscapes, natural scenes. In the words of the New Yorker, Alan’s paintings “are cool, elegant, and blessedly devoid of prettiness … [They]evoke nature’s majesty but drain away its wildness.”
The Evening Social is a chance for residents to meet the artist, enjoy refreshments, and learn about the Maine Highlands Council for the Arts.
