Public hearing Thursday on bill to eliminate certain motor vehicle inspections

AUGUSTA — Rep. Chad Perkins, R-Dover Foxcroft announced today that his bill to eliminate certain motor vehicle inspections will have a public hearing Thursday, April 6 at 1 p.m.  LD 1242 – “An Act to Eliminate Certain Motor Vehicle Inspections,” repeals statutory provisions requiring inspections for motor vehicles registered in the State, except that the provisions regarding inspection of commercial motor vehicles, trailers and semi trailers under the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 29-A, section 1753; inspection of fire trucks under Title 29-A, section 1755; and inspection by dealers and transporters under Title 29-A, section 1754 are not repealed.

“Data shows that having your vehicle inspected or uninspected has no bearing on whether or not it is involved in a motor vehicle accident,” said Perkins. “Average people cannot always afford to fix minor defects that do not affect performance, operability or passenger safety. It is time to review this policy in light of the fact that we already have an unsafe vehicle law on the books.”

What:  Public Hearing on LD 1242 – “An Act to Eliminate Certain Motor Vehicle Inspections”
